It is no novel discovery that the sun is the biggest enemy of our skin. Therefore, we all have to protect it and take care of it against UV rays all year round, but even more so in the summer.
As we age, our skin becomes more fragile, sensitive and delicate. It is important to be aware of the need for good skin care of the elderly to maintain their elasticity and hydration.
Because exposure to the sun not only causes skin damage or injury, it also causes our body to lose water. In summer, many elderly people go to the hospital due to dehydration problems.

Good daily hygiene
To wash, both body and hands, use warm water and odorless soaps with neutral pH, such as oatmeal, as they are softer and respectful for the skin of older people.
It is also recommended that they be very moisturizing and firming so that they provide the necessary nutrients for good skin care of the elderly. Over the years, the skin cells shrink and lose their smoothness and flexibility.
In case of chafing, use fast absorbing protective creams
Avoid rubbing the skin if there has already been a scratch or wound, as we could increase the injury or ailment. As we said before, the skin of older people is very fragile.
Use oils to prevent dryness
Oils such as almonds have a high content of essential fatty acids and antioxidants. If we apply oil once a day, our skin will be more hydrated and we will help prevent the appearance of sores or other ailments caused by dry skin.
Drink a lot of water
The high temperatures in summer cause us to lose a lot of liquid. We have to worry about our elders taking at least 2 liters a day, even if they are not thirsty. If we are hydrated inside we will also be outside.
The same thing happens with food. It is essential to consume foods rich in antioxidants (vitamins A, C and E, and selenium) to keep the body and skin constantly hydrated. And where do we find them? Well in the fruit and fresh vegetables.
It is recommended to eat about 5 servings of fruits and vegetables a day. In addition to providing us with extra hydration, they slow down the natural signs of aging such as wrinkles.
Bask in moderation
It is beneficial for the elderly to go to the beach to take a little while in the sun, because it provides them with vitamin D, but nothing to go to the hottest hours, such as between 10 and 7 in the afternoon!
And, totally obligatory, if you go to the beach or simply go out on the street, apply sun creams with a photo protection above the SPF 15 every 2 hours approximately. The solar incidence in the skin of the elderly is very negative and can cause dermatoporosis or aging of the skin. According to studies, the first signs of this disease appear around 60 years and it is advisable to be cautious and do everything possible for the good skin care of the elderly.
Walk with caution
If in spite of the heat, there is no longer anyone who stays at home, because they want to socialize or get together with friends, then try to walk in the shade. But, we insist, avoid going out in the hottest hours of the day.
Wear appropriate clothes
To care for the skin of the elderly, it is also advisable to use light, light-colored clothing that does not attract heat. Do not forget to cover your head with a hat or cap.
Periodically check the skin
And, although it may seem obvious, freckles, spots and moles should be examined from time to time to see if they have increased in size or have changed shape or texture or if a certain wound or ulcer has not healed.
